Ghost Ships of the Baltic Sea

Carl Douglas, Jonas Dahm

In Östersjön there are over 100,000 shipwrecks. There is everything from 17th-century royal ships, stately 18th-century wooden ships and 19th-century cargo ships, to submarines from World War II. Due to the cold water and absence of shipworm, these vessels have been preserved largely in tact since the day they sank. It is like travelling back in time with a strange combination of dramatic brutality and gentle calm. As if the crew have just left the ship.

Divers Jonas Dahm and Carl Douglas’ documentation and photographs of wreckages have received attention worldwide and are being presented for the first time in this large format.
