My Child Online

Maria Dufva

Nowadays, just about every 10 year old has a smartphone and spends an average of three hours a day playing online games. And 15 % of all 2 year olds use the Internet on a daily basis. Yet we still ask our children more about how their days have been at school and which friends they’ve played with than about their online activities. Children’s lives online – with chat rooms, online games and social media – are very different to ours. The Internet is a wonderful resource but its access can also pose hazards in the form of online abuse and cyber bullying and hate. If we regard mobile phones and tablets as problems, it can become a source of conflicts and children might start using them secretly instead and not
tell us if something happens.
In this book, criminologist Maria Dufva guides parents in how to create
safe conditions for making their children’s lives online as wonderful, fun and educational as they can – and should – be. How can we parents create a curious approach? How should we talk to our children about their lives online? Where are they all those hours that they spend sitting with their mobiles or tablets and what are the dangers? And how can we
help them to choose the right path and stay on it?
