VELOCITY takes place during the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

Nineteen-year-old Marie-Louise is a Tutsi and the novel follows her life with Félicien, a bicycle repairman who is Hutu. In the district where they live, five out of six Tutsis will be killed by their neighbouring Hutus.

Gassilewski examines power and powerlessness as well as the responsibility of the collective and the individual.
