The Escape

Frida Andersson Johansson

Introducing part two of ’Royal Romace’ — a Swedish series in the spirit of ’The Crown’

It’s the spring of 1940, and Princess Märtha of Sweden and Norway knits socks for the young women in the army and her organization Women’s Workers’ Aid, while Crown Prince Olav of Norway anxiously reads the newspaper and listens to the radio. They can hear their three small kids playing further down the hallway. Märtha tries to focus on the fact that she got the life she wanted with Olav. She reminds herself she has been happy as the tears threaten to pool over. She knows this will all soon be coming to an end. Over the radio, they can hear how the nazis are getting closer to the border, and soon they will invade their country, their home.

As the royal family is planning their escape Märtha and Olav both know they have no choice – they must separate to have a chance at survival. Märtha and their kids rush toward the Swedish border while Olav flees further north to set up resistance against the nazis.

In Sweden, Märtha and the kids quickly learn, however, that they are perceived as a political threat, and it doesn’t take long until they have to flee again. Märtha receives an invitation from her friend President Roosevelt to come to America, and she feels like she has no other choice than to begin a brand-new life in America with the kids. Once more, Märtha and Olav’s love is put to the test; A ocean and war separate them; will they ever see each other again?

The Escape is a thrilling love story where we follow Princess Märtha of Sweden and Norway and see the important part she played in Norway’s liberation, and her unwavering diplomacy during the war to ensure constant support for Norway across the world.

‘Frida Andersson Johansson has managed to weave together historical facts with imaginary characters in a tender and realistic way, without losing either momentum or tension. For those interested in history, The Escape is a masterpiece, but the book should be equally appreciated by readers with an eye for relationships. A very well written book, with a strong sense of character, setting and plot.’ BTJ
