Birger Emanuelsen is awarded the Sørlandet Literature Prize 2026 for the novel The Odyssey.

“Birger Emanuelsen has written an unsentimental, sensual, beautiful, and thought-provoking novel,” the jury stated, having selected The Odyssey—together with the public—as this year’s winner in the fiction category of the prize.

In the novel, a son takes his father—who is living with dementia—to the family cabin at the very edge of the open sea, where they stay for an extended period of time. Neither the sister nor the home care service is enthusiastic about the arrangement.
