Lennart Nilsson

New picture book of the Journey of Life, from conception to birth!

The original publication of A Child is Born by Lennart Nilsson in 1965 was one of the most important books of the modern age, comparable to the first publication of NASA’s photographs of the Apollo missions to the Moon. Modern man had photographed how far he had traveled and through Lennart’s work he had photographed how he was conceived.

The success of the book worldwide was based on Lennart’s gift as a storyteller as well as the power of the extraordinary images. For the new edition of A Child is Born the narrative from the sperm and the egg meeting to birth itself has been explained through pictures in a way that is suitable for the new century. The pictures are seen in their full glory, rather than as illustrations to a text. The visual nature of the sequence will indeed grant the book the universal appeal.

The reader is taken from the moment of conception to the moment of birth in a way that allows these wonderful pictures to be seen again as if for the very first time. A book is reborn.

There is a new format, new layout, new text and new reproduction of the photos. Each chapter begins with a series of photos that then are followed by an essay about the Egg cell, The Sperm, Fertilisation, Pregnancy, and then Birth.

The text consists of pure facts; the previous text about how to eat during pregnacy for instance, is gone. The photos are only those showing what is going on inside the womb.

The book is made in two versions: One small and one bigger including an additional eight pages, with information about the history of A child is born, from the beginning, through all the different editions up until present day
