Planet of the FungiThe Secret Life of the World’s Largest Living Organism

Jesper Nyström

Why can you grow button mushrooms but not chanterelles?

A seemingly simple question posed to Jesper Nyström by his daughter during a mushroom picking trip. Despite being a science journalist with a PhD in biology, he didn’t know the answer. This question inspired the start of a journey in which the author invites the reader to follow him down into the bedrock and out into space. Fungi can be anything from our worst enemies to our best friends. This book explores how fungi destroy harvests, kill forests, and make ants into zombies, but also how they provide us with medi-cines, food, drinks, and in the future perhaps even fuel, clothes, and roofs over our heads.

Fungi can be found almost everywhere around the world, and they might also exist on Mars, too. They come in all kinds of in – cre dible colours and shapes, and can grow larger than any other organism on Earth.
