Responsive Parenting

Responsive Parenting
Malin Bergström, illustrated by Lotta SjöbergResponsive Parenting is the book for those who want to become a present and emotionally responsive parent. Malin Bergström describes in detail the first four years of a child’s life, focusing on the interaction between parents and children and how they connect with each other during the first years of the child’s life.
It is an essential book for new parents. In-depth descriptions of how children develop and insightful reasoning on how to lay the foundations for responsive parenting are interspersed with practical tips and advice on how to deal with the rather messy business of parenting (colic, snacking, defiance, jealousy, sleep deprivation).
The book is organised by age and stage of development (physical, motor, cognitive and social), making it easy to follow. Key themes such as attachment and language development are described in detail, as well as topics that are constantly discussed: sleep, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, gender patterns and boundary setting.
The book emphasises parents’ ability to be emotionally responsive. Issues such as the impact of having a child on the couple’s relationship and how to approach gender equality and parental leave are discussed. There are also sections on being a single parent, separation and cohabitation.
A final, easy-to-read chapter provides information on what often characterises a family’s early years – children’s symptoms, illnesses and health. The chapter is peer-reviewed by an experienced paediatrician.
The book has brand new images by photographer Nanna Bylund. The illustrations are by Lotta Sjöberg, author of Bebisbekännelser and Family living – the true story.
