The Boundary

Maria Nilsson Thore, illustrated by Maria Nilsson Thore

Some grown-up has painted a thick red line on the ground at the edge of the courtyard where Nono lives. That’s the boundary. Beyond it is forbidden territory. Most children stay within the boundary and don’t seem to mind, but Nono gets the shivers when she thinks of the boundary. What does ‘forbidden’ actually mean? Is it the same as dangerous? And does it count if you go over it just a little bit?

The Boundary is about the limits set by adults and children’s curiosity, about the exciting feeling of overstepping the mark, but also about the importance of knowing that safety awaits back home – all portrayed with Maria Nilsson Thores’ characteristic warm humour, philosophical ingenuity and atmospheric setting.
