The Last Butterfly

Nima Hasan

A remarkable collection of poems by Palestinian author Nima Hasan, written in Gaza

Nima is writing straight from the critical situation in Gaza, where she is living in an encampment with her children after their house was destroyed by the bomb raids. Her literary precision is utterly captivating. Since autumn 2023, Nima Hasan has been posting poems on social media. She writes in a light, unpretentious tone, but at the same time with razor-sharp, tumultuous imagery that directly describes the present catastrophe and longingly recalls another existence. Nima Hasan’s poems are not a description of war, they are written while the bombs are falling. How she manages to write with such poetic presence under these conditions is in itself astonishing.

Swedish translator Jasim Mohamed translated the poems as soon as they appeared on his screen. Hasan and Mohamed have since worked closely together to compile this book – the poems have not been published in Arabic, the Swedish translation is an original work. We are proud to share nima’s words and hope her poems will reach readers across the world.
