The Soldiers of the Duke

Jo Salmson, illustrated by Peter Bergting

If you invite an almander to cross your threshold, your life will never be the same again. That’s what Rian’s grandfather had told him, but Rian thought it was just a story, because no human being had seen an almander for hundreds of years.
But one day when Grandfather is out, Elien the almander knocks on the door of their cottage. He has returned from the Kingdom of the Shadows, where the almanders battle constantly against evil creatures such as wheenzles and marwolves. Thanks to Rian, and the almanders’ magical silver amulet, the other almanders also manage to find their way back to our world.
Rian gives the amulet to his grandfather so that he can buy food, but this arouses the suspicions of the powerful duke – how has a poor peasant got hold of something so valuable? The duke’s soldiers seize Grandfather, and no-one in the village dares to stop them. Now Rian must free his grandfather by himself. Or could he perhaps get some help from the mysterious Lode – although Rian doesn’t really know if he can trust him…
