When I Am Happiest

When I Am Happiest
Rose Lagercrantz, illustrated by Eva ErikssonIn the third book in the Dunne series, the summer holidays are just about to begin, when what shouldn’t happen, happens: Dunne’s father is run over by a car and is taken to hospital.
“I have to see my daddy. Now!” wails Dunne. She and grandma go to the hospital and Dunne is allowed to see him and whisper his name. But he just sleeps and sleeps until Dunne shouts “daddy” as loudly as she can and then he opens his eyes, looks at her and closes them again. “Daddy will be all right”, calms the doctor, “it’ll take time, probably all summer at least.”
Dunne is relieved but most of all she feels tired, tired as you can only feel when you have been really scared. She really only wants to think of nice things, like the end of term and lilies of the valley but how can even their lovely scent give you pleasure when daddy is lying in hospital? And should you really feel such joy when your best friend phones to ask you to her family’s island? Yes, of course you can! You have to carry on with your life and be happy. And despite everything, Dunne is happy inside.
This is a warm and sincere story about joy and sorrow and Dunne’s great love for her father. A fantastic third story about Dunne who takes life as it comes and doesn’t give up on anything!
The books in the Dunne series have been translated into twenty-seven languages, sold over 1,4 million copies world-wide and received numerous awards. The first book in the series, My Happy Life, was named one of The New York Times Most Notable Books in 2013 and was nominated for the Prix Sorcières 2014 as well as the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2012. This easy-to-read series deals with emotions in a way that children can understand and relate to and is perfectly complemented by the warm and endearing illustrations.
