“Every life has a beginning and an end. Yours began three days ago. I thought Grandma’s idea of writing a book was a good one. So, this story is for you – if you promise not to die.”

On Christmas Eve, 11-year-old (soon to be 12) Polly Storm becomes a big sister, but the presents under the tree will have to wait, as her little brother has to stay at the hospital. Polly gets to move in with Grandma for a while. None of the fun things they usually do make any difference now. The wait turns Polly’s anxious thoughts into a tangled mess.

“Why don’t you write a book!” says Grandma – a book for her little brother. For there are things that Polly’s baby brother needs to know about life at No. 3 Broom Hill. Lots of things, big and small. So while Grandma lights a cigar on the balcony, Polly writes to her little brother about Edwin and the party where everything went wrong, about Isabella in her class, about the disco at the ice rink, and about text messages that never arrive.

With warm-hearted curiosity and subtle humour, Anna Ehring takes us into the world of eleven-soon to be twelve-year-old Polly during a few snow-cold days in December when life is upended, and Christmas is put on hold.

Anna Ehring is known for her unique ability to portray the extraordinary drama of everyday life. With books like the Dragonheart series about Nisse Berg in Bagarmossen, Mira and Martin, and the books about Herring (illustrated by Moa Graaf), she has won the hearts of readers and critics alike, establishing herself as one of our foremost authors of relationship dramas for young readers. Ehring has also illustrated the book, while the photographs of “Polly” were taken by Trixie Edlund Falkenborg.
