Birgitta Stenberg
Birgitta Stenberg was born 1932. She never completed high school but travelled for several years in southern Europe where she got inspiration, made connection and laid the foundation for her career as a writer. 1956 she made her debut with the novel “Mikel och Poeten”, a novel with very advanced form of narrative however her future books would contain a much more accessible style. In order to achieve this she needed to find out what she wanted from life, a path full of many twists and turns. She tried different art colonies and major European cities and was drawn into the lifestyle they offered. Her life was contained turbulent relationships, drugs, becoming both a catholic and communist and working for the CIA. Her salvation became a small island off the Swedish west coast. She there worked as a professional fisherman and wrote children’s books in her spare time. Stenberg known as a writer of adult fiction, but has also captured the younger audience. Perhaps her most famous children’s books are the Billy books perfectly illustrated by Mati Lepp. Birgitta Stenberg passed away in August 2014.
